Over 500 acres of secluded wooded forest with a 1.6 mile access road that gently slopes through the forest.
Google Maps and other GPS programs use a point in the middle of the forest for "Andersen Hill State Forest". Instead, use "Andersen Hill State Forest Access Road" as the google map way point. On Andersen Hill Road, there is a sign for the forest at the entrance to the access road.
The access road that cuts through the forest is located on Andersen Hill Road. Note that while Andersen Hill Road starts on the east end at Route 38, after 0.5 miles, it becomes a seasonal road, closed through winter to April 1.
You can also come from Route 79, turning south onto West Creek Road and then bear left shortly after, onto Andersen Hill Road.
You can park along the shoulder of the access road, just look for a few spots that can be wet and muddy and avoid those for parking. At the end of the road is a larger turn-around and parking area.
The 554 acres are a mix of conifers and hardwoods. Many of the trees were planted and therefore are lined up plantation style. While there are no official trails, there is the 1.6 mile seasonal access road. This has gentle slopes, probably not much more than 50 feet difference throughout. A few small streams pass through. There are also a few swampy areas.
Originally it was cleared for pasture and cropland by settlers in the early 1800s. You'll still see some large farms adjacent to the area today. Most of the forest land was purchased between 1838 and 1942. The Civilian Conseravation Corps (CCC) out of Slaterville Springs (camp S-125) planted, by hand, over 61,000 trees. Additionally, another 111,000 seedlings were planted by the NY State Conservation Department in 1954 and 1963. A lot of these (60%) were Norway Spruce, Red Pine, and White Spruce.
