Wendell Root originally received an ROTC commission while in college, and was called into the Army Air Corps in August 1942. He was listed as missing in action while stationed in New Guinea on July 8, 1944, and then on March 7, 1946 declared killed in action. He was one of fourteen passengers on A B-17E "Queenie" (#41-2464). The Five crew members and fourteen passengers were all presumed perished at sea. He was survived by his parents Mr. and Mrs. Albert Root of Addison, New York. His name is included on the "Wall of the Missing" at the Manila American Cemetery and Memorial in the Philippines.
