Irwin Shaffer enlisted on October 27, 1942. He was killed in July 8, 1944 while piloting a B-24 Liberator bomber involved in a bombing mission of the Japanese over China when his plane was shot down. He was survived by his wife Mary of Endicott. He was a graduate of Union-Endicott High School.
There is a "Hometown Hero Banner" to honor Lieutenant Shaffer in the Village of Endicott. It is located on the north side of Main Street between Nanticoke and Badger Avenues. It is fairly close to the intersection with Badger. See Hometown Heroes page for more details.
